I've Done This 107 Times. Let's Celebrate!

A few weeks ago while vacationing in Paris (I promise I'll stop talking about that someday) I let the second anniversary of my Mid-Week Oasis Moments come and go without a peep.

Truthfully, I was so caught up in planning our trip, then exploring and falling in love with Paris and mooning over the experience once we returned home, it just didn't register.

I'm so happy to celebrate the fact that I've created and shared 107 Mid-Week Oasis Moments! One each and every Wednesday for a little more than two years now. (If you don't already receive these weekly bite-size bonbons of creative inspiration and would like to, please let me know in the comments section below and I'll be happy to send them your way!)

Your bonus session is worth $81.25 to $181.25
depending on the package purchased.

Creative coaching has helped me create a life filled with creative joy and fulfillment.  It's now my passion to help others experience the feelings of freedom and satisfaction that come with making the time and space for living a creative life. I'd love to help you do just that!

5-Minute Flash of Creative Freedom & Fun

My latest 5-minute flash of creative freedom & fun!

I’m always looking for new ways to weave a littlelow-pressure creativity into my life and share it with others looking to do the same. Though I’m blessed to experience lots of creative satisfaction through my Creative Oasis Coaching work, I still want to practice what I preach and explore all manner of creativity for the sheer joy of it. Even a short burst of creative play can infuse our busy days with an amazing feeling of freedom and fun!

Although I’m a singer/songwriter and a creativity coach, I don’t consider myself a visual artist. Nevertheless, I love to play with art supplies, compile collages, dabble in photography and explore other forms of arts and crafts.

Mandala I made during a Creative Oasis Day Tripper outing

The latest, greatest way I’ve found to enjoy a quick flash of creative freedom is by using an app called “Over” on my iPhone. Last week I took a photo of my calendar (I love the Japanese Woodblock images), then wrote a quick haiku inspired by the shot and finally used the “Over” app to combine them to create the image you see above which I then posted on Instagram (creativeoasiscoach). I'm so happy with the way it turned out. The project took about five minutes from start to finish and was super easy and fun to do.

Today we have hundreds (if not thousands) of great, easy-to-use apps (many of them free) literally at our fingertips. I’ll continue to share my favorite findings with you as I search for the best and brightest that allow us to infuse a burst of creative energy into our busy lives.

BTW - I’m not an affiliate or associated with “Over” or “iPhone” in any way. Just like to share what’s working for me creatively in the hopes you might enjoy exploring it as well.

If you have a favorite app you use to add a little creative play to your day, I’d love to hear about it in the comment section below.

Thanks so much to all of you who have donated to help my fundraising for Love Hope Strength!
I just returned from the hike which was seriously challenging, but doable and an amazing experience. We hiked with cancer survivors, their loved ones, musicians and hundreds of wonderfully caring people from all over the world to create awareness and raise money for Love Hope Strength - fighting cancer one concert and one hike at a time!

There's still time to donate to this fabulous foundation that's building cancer centers around the globe, helping to staff them with doctors and raising awareness about how easy and painless it now is to be a bone marrow donor.

Wanted Dead or Alive – Procrastination

Procrastination...it's one of our most common creative blocks.

It keeps us from enjoying our creative endeavors by allowing our inner critic to whisper in our ear: "You're no good at this. You don't have time for this nonsense. Who do you think you are?"

Procrastination convinces us that everyone else's stuff is more important than our own.

It causes us to hop up and look for something to eat when we're not the least bit hungry.

It fills us with a strange desire to re-organize our perfectly organized sock drawer or pantry or creative closet.

Procrastination tempts us to check Facebook, Twitter and email about ten times more often than we need.

It thrives on busy-work that could easily wait until tomorrow or even never in many cases.

It encourages our stubborn refusal to delegate and assures us that we must do everything ourselves.

Procrastination sucks. Literally. Procrastination sucks the creative life out of us.
So how to we rid our lives of this insidious creative block?

Simply acknowledging our various procrastination habits is a great first small step. When see our blocks for what they are...when we're aware of the many ways they creep into our lives, that's the first step to hunting down procrastination and putting it behind bars where it belongs.

Here's an easy way to start. What if you make a quick list of all the various ways you might procrastinate today? By taking a moment to acknowledge the different ways you might keep yourself from making time for creative joy, you'll be more aware when your excuses pop up through out the day.

You may realize:

"Oh, look - here I am on Facebook again. I could spend the next 15 minutes here,
or I could get out my watercolors and paint."

You may find yourself staring into your fridge and think,

"I'm not the least bit hungry for food. I want to play the piano!"

You may find yourself shuffling papers around your desk and have the epiphany
"I'd much rather be writing!"

The idea is, when we're on the look out for our blocks we can stop them in their tracks. We can remind ourselves that we have a choice. "I can spend more time doing this thing I don't really need or want to be doing, or take this time back for my creativity." It takes practice, but it's a doable way to begin. And even if you only open up an additional ten or fifteen minutes in your day for creativity – well, that's ten or fifteen minutes more than you had before – so it's great movement in the right direction!

Here's to rounding up our procrastination habits and locking them up where they belong so we can free up more time for creative satisfaction in our life!

Need more help saying NO to procrastination and YES to creative fulfillment? One-on-one creativity coaching may be just the ticket.

Until next time, all the best from my Creative Oasis to yours,
Jill

From Resistance to Creative Flow With The War of Art

Reading The War of Art by Steven Pressfield in preparation for the next Creative Oasis Book Club tele-class series has been an enlightening experience. With each page I feel a powerful connection to Pressfield and his desire to help us break through our own resistance. I admire his unabashed honesty. He holds nothing back as he calls spade after spade regarding our communal love affair with resistance to pursuing our creative dreams. Pressfield fully understands our propensity to procrastinate...our reliance on resistance...our preference for putting off our hearts' desires. His book serves up an in-your-face wake-up call that this must end if we're to live the creatively fulfilling lives we're meant to live. I love this book!

I hope you'll join me for the next Creative Oasis Book Club series as we explore The War of Art May 2nd through 19th. Much more than a typical book club, this unique three week teleclass series provides an in-depth exploration of the book plus creative prompts to encourage us to put the lessons Pressfeld shares into immediate practice in our own lives. (click here to register today)

In addition to helping you to dive deeper into the experience of reading The War of Art these thought-provoking and fun creative exercises foster interesting and meaningful discussion during our telelclass calls. (This is very low-pressure - not homework - simply prompts to use and enjoy in whichever way feels best to you.)

$75
THE WAR OF ART
3-PART TELECLASS SERIES INCLUDES:

* Three 1-hour interactive teleclass calls
* Three sets of creative prompts and activities created specifically for each call
* Three links to the recorded calls
(if you're unable to attend the calls lives or just want to revisit the sessions on your own time)

Three consecutive Thursdays
May 2, 9 and 16, 2013
2 to 3 pm (central)

Email creativeoasiscoach@me.com to register today.

If you'd like to purchase your own copy of The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, feel free to visit my amazon associates store with this link: http://astore.amazon.com/creaoasicoac-20 to place your order.

Here's what members of last month's Creative Oasis Book Club
have to say about their experience:

"The Creative Oasis Book Club was a wonderful chance to encourage myself to take time to read a book I have been wanting to read but just haven't made the time to do so. The group members' insights and perspectives expanded my thinking. The prompts for thought and exploration Jill provided for each chapter added new ideas and dimensions to my reading. What a enriching experience. I can't wait to join in the fun for her next book club!"
– Twyla Smith
http://threeyellowfeathers.typepad.com

"I really enjoyed participating in the Creative Oasis Book Club!
My favorite part of the experience is hearing others perspectives of how Austin Kleon spoke to them and encouraged them. I liked your thought provoking prompts and I love that there was no real homework.  We could do the prompts on any level that we wanted and pick and choose what might organically work."

– Debbie Stinson

I look forward to navigating new creative territory with you as we explore the many ways
The War of Art may help us moved passed resistance and dive into the freedom of creative flow.

Asked for Two Cents & Received Gold

This past weekend I posted a simple request on my Creative Oasis Coaching facebook page asking my former and present clients to share their two cents about Creative Oasis Coaching and what it has meant to them.

"If you've ever taken one of my classes, workshops, retreats, have been coached by me or gone on a Day Trippers outing, can you share one word to describe it? Thanks so much!"

The response was overwhelming, heartwarming and tickling – as in it tickled me pink. I know sometimes people have a little trouble understanding what it is that I do exactly as a creativity coach, a certified Master Kaizen-Muse® Creativity Coach to be precise. And even when I tell them that I help people make the time and space in their busy lives to enjoy creative fulfillment, they may still be left scratching their heads. So I'm thrilled to have this feedback to share. Perhaps it will help round out the picture of what Creative Oasis Coaching has to offer and how it touches the lives of those who choose to join me.

"Jill is an outstanding teacher. More than that.... she is a leader who has this wonderful way of bringing you back to yourself. Whatever it is you are thinking about taking don't hesitate. Sign up. Not only did I get tons of new ideas and information in her class, I also made new friends... kindred spirits. Run, leap, scamper, skurry, charge forward and sign up. You will not regret it. Sorry. I couldn't think of one word.... Ok FUN!!!" - Margaret Wolf, photographer

"nurturing" – Donna Wallace

"You are in for a delightfully insightful and enriching experience to be coached by Jill. Go for it!" – Twyla Smith

"Brain twisting, in the best way!! : ))" Rosemary Cingari

"The first word that came to mind was nourishing, so even though I'm half asleep I'm going with it - Nourishment for the artistic soul :)" - Polly Simon

"life-changing. does a hyphenated word count?" – Dawn McMullan

"Stimulating...motivating...Incredibly fun! (one word won't do!)" – Sherry Houpt

"illuminating... Hope you have an incredibly, stimulating, motivating, fun and illuminating day! ;)" – Linda Bourgault

So there you have it. I asked for their two cents and got gold instead! I love the words they chose, the sentiments and the women themselves. That's another wonderful bonus of attending Creative Oasis classes and workshops – meeting wonderful, inspiring, talented women like these!

Thanks so much to everyone who shared. I look forward to the next time we're together in the same creative oasis!

If you're interested in checking out the workshops and classes I'm offering in Dallas this fall click here for all the information and registration links. If you'd like to receive my monthly Creative Oasis Pages to keep up with all the creative fun we're having just send me a quick email at creativeoasiscoach@me.com and I'll be happy to bring you into the loop!

Until next time all the best from my Creative Oasis to yours,

Creative Comfort in Three Short Lines

Recently the Creative Oasis Day Trippers journeyed to Photographs Do Not Bend in the Dallas Design District to experience "From Uncommon to Blue," an exhibit of photographs by Keith Carter. Inspired by Carter's photos of everyday life taken in dozens of small Texas towns, our pre-trip creative prompt was to capture something from our daily world through a creative lens. Even commonplace objects such as a coffee mug became art when we took the time to view them as such, and we all agreed it was fun to step into the role of photographer in this way. But taking our photos was just the beginning!

Comfort

Feels good in my hands

After taking in the exhibit, we shared our own images with each other. Then we created word pools (a quick list of words inspired by our photographs) as a jumping off point to write haikus, which  provide the opportunity for creative expression in a low pressure way with a short, gentle, easy-to-use structure.

Anticipation
by
Suzy Doss
Hope springs eternal
comfort of nature's promise
peaceful beginnings...

We all agreed that this was a wonderful reminder that it doesn't take a tremendous amount of time to experience a tremendous amount of creative joy and satisfaction. Here's one more example:

Fun
by
Maribeth Flowers
Glowing shapes. Bottles
It's color for the party.
Jump in. Dance tonight.

Looking for some quick, fun, easy-to-do creative fulfillment?
Why not take a few simple shots around your home? Then, simply choose an image you like and take a minute to jot down a dozen or so words that come to mind when you view your photo. Choose words from your word pool to write your haiku. (no need to use them all and feel free to add others once you begin to write)

Want to head straight to the haiku? I'll provide a word pool for you below using some of the interesting names of the small Texas towns photographed by Keith Carter.

paradise, oatmeal, pep, blossom, bebe, air, earth, birthright, looneyville, noonday, blessing, uncertain, sweet home, lovelady, art, sublime, fate, welcome, splendora

Have fun and please feel free to share you haikus!
Until next time, all the best from my creative oasis to yours,
Jill

Are You Ready to Live the Creative Life? 6 Week Group Class Starts this February

Join me, Jill Allison Bryan, for my upcoming
Spring 2012 group class

LIVING THE CREATIVE LIFE
A 6-week course dedicated to gently lifting
your creative dreams to the top of your to-do list!

Do you have a list of creative projects a mile long that you promise yourself you'll get around to some day? Do you spend hours dreaming of creating mixed media art projects, learning to knit, cooking up delicious new recipes, playing piano, or writing that book you've had in your head for years? Do you long for the time to actually break out those art supplies, whip up new epicurean delights, or actually sit down to do some writing?

I can relate! Until I found Kaizen-Muze® Creativity Coaching, I was frustrated by my own procrastination, lack of focus and follow-through and a big dose of overwhelm.
Now that creative satisfaction is an essential part of my everyday life – not just something I get to do when the laundry is finished, all my work is completed and the bills are paid – I want to share what I've learned. Living a life where creativity is as much of a habit as brushing your teeth is doable and fun!

I believe everyone deserves to experience creative fulfillment. And, believe it or not, you can easily make the time and space in your life to enjoy your own Creative Oasis™. Whether it’s cooking, writing, painting, making music, comedy, scrap-booking, creating collages, blogging, gardening, performing, organizing –
whatever it is that your heart longs to do – that’s your Creative Oasis™.

So often we let procrastination, perfectionism, and a general feeling of being overwhelmed by our busy lives stop us from making the time for activities that energize and delight us.  It doesn’t have to be that way. As a certified Kaizen-Muse® Creativity Coach, I offer a treasure chest of easy to methods that can help anyone enjoy creative satisfaction in their lives.

During this unique 6-week class I’ll share these in a fun group setting that provides camaraderie and gentle accountability. We'll learn and practice these fun, yet effective techniques together while I'll offer support as you gently move creativity from the bottom to the top of your to-do list.

Here's what people had to say about my December 2011 mini-retreat:

"I loved Jill's class on creativity. I enjoyed the playful atmosphere and the permission to be who we really are! I feel inspired to make some small and gentle changes to make my life work better. Thanks, Jill!"
Suzanne M.

"This class made me stop and think, look into my brain and know what I want to do next. I feel that my creative juices were massaged and ready to take action."      Sandra T.

I myself have enjoyed tremendous personal growth and creative satisfaction as a result of learning and using these methods – from writing and recording my debut solo CD, "Dancing in Limbo," to creating and hosting a CD release/silent art auction benefit that raised more than $10,000 for Women for Women International (Infinite Possibility – A Night of Music, Art & Women Helping Women,) to founding my own business, Creative Oasis Coaching. (All this from someone who was once a world-class procrastinator and the queen of not following through!)

Now, as a certified Kaizen-Muse® Creativity Coach, my passion is sharing these methods with others so they too can experience creative joy and fulfillment in their lives. I fully believe if I can do it, anyone can, and this mini-retreat is a great place to begin!
